Antique Turn-of-the-Century Jewel Family Kitchen Scale, c. 1900

Step back into the American home of 1900 with this rare and beautifully preserved Jewel Family Scale — a countertop household scale made in the United States at the turn of the century. Dating conservatively to circa 1900–1910, with strong evidence pointing to as early as 1898–1903, this is a genuine piece of domestic history, not a reproduction.

The original cream dial is wonderfully aged, printed in red with the legend "JEWEL FAMILY SCALE — 24 POUNDS BY OZS. — NOT LEGAL FOR USE IN TRADE" — that last line a charming reminder that this scale was made for the family kitchen, not the merchant's counter. The outer dial runs 0–23 with fine ounce graduations, and the original pointer and mechanism remain intact.

In its day, a scale like this would have weighed flour for baking, produce from the garden, cuts of meat, canning ingredients, and household parcels. The large square platform was designed to hold a bowl, basket, or loose goods with ease.

The condition is exceptional for its age: beautifully aged original surface with expected wear, patina, and oxidation consistent with age. The original black finish shows honest paint loss along the base; the dial carries the warm discoloration of over a century of use. This is exactly the character that makes a piece like this so visually compelling — and why we've left it untouched.

A faint maker's emblem is visible on the side of the case, adding to its authenticity and intrigue.
